The diabetes diet should you start now to prevent type 2 diabetes

A type 2 diabetes diet is getting more and more important as the disease becomes increasingly common in Western society. A sound diabetes diet is needed because of increasingly bad culinary habits and lack of exercise in many people’s lives today. By eating wisely and exercising regularly, type 2 diabetes is a disease that is preventable, even though it can be very serious, but ultimately, prevention is far easier than a cure.

Type 2 diabetes can be described as the body's incapability of managing and regulating blood glucose levels. Even though the body produces good and efficient insulin, the means whereby glucose is absorbed into the cells for metabolism breaks down and fails.

As far as diabetes goes, type 2 is the most common type of diabetes prevalent in the United States today, accounting for 90 to 95 percent of all diabetes incidences. It affects nearly 21 million people in the United States alone and the frequency of the disease has soared in the last thirty years. It is normally linked to obesity, prior history of gestational diabetes, prior history of gestational diabetes, a family history of diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, older age, physical inactivity and ethnicity. Compared with 6% prevalence in Caucasians, the incidence in African Americans and Asian Americans is estimated at approximately 10%, in Hispanics 15%, and in certain Native American communities, 20% to 50%.

If you are a person who is at risk of, or have previously been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, weight control should be of paramount importance. A diabetes diet is easy to implement and you can simply start by replacing simple carbs such as pasta and white bread with ones that take a bit longer to digest like whole grains, whole grain bread and legumes. It’s important to try and remove, if at all possible, candy and sugary sodas, as well as all kinds of processed foods but even more importantly, cut right back on your fast food intake. A diabetes diet should involve eating plenty of leafy greens, fresh fruit, and the colored variety of vegetables. Try and limit red meat intake and stick to lean cuts.

Above all, don't give up on improving your diet. Seek professional guidance from diet planners and nutritionists if it all seems like an uphill struggle - both your health and your quality of life will thank you for it!

Dumbwaiters in the making

Different types of lifts are available to aid physically handicapped individuals in transferring from one floor to another, the dumbwaiters are also excellent contraptions for such people, especially for those who have limited mobility due to decreased strength (in the elderly), arthritis, disabilities, and other medical ailments.

Dumbwaiters are actually small elevators, which travel across different floor levels of a structure in a downward or upward course from the starting point or base. These units allow certain individuals to move laundry or grocery items, and the likes, without having to carry such items and climbing up and down the staircases. Doing the latter can further put the weak individual at risk for falls and other related injuries.

Dumbwaiter elevators are widely used in schools, nursing homes, hospitals and residential homes today. Most people consider the existence of dumbwaiters in the homes as an expensive luxury and extravagance. However, there is an increasing value for devices and equipment such as these since it can greatly aid the elderly or disabled consumers.

To cater to such needs, the mobility aid industry has created the dumbwaiter elevators that can be used by both special and normal individuals. With this, the dumbwaiter is now seen not solely as a lavish appliance but also as an aid for those people who need such equipment the most.

Dumbwaiters may be installed in a particular room, like a bedroom or kitchen, depending on the needs and preferences of the user or homeowner. And did you know that you can build a dumbwaiter elevator in an already existing wall in your own home without any professional help? Yes, you can. But doing so takes some right planning and skill. Here’s a simple set up.

How to Build a Manual Residential Dumbwaiter

Step One

Plan the direction of your personal dumbwaiter. Measure the floor space that your dumbwaiter will consume. Choose a spot that has no hindrances. For safety purposes, check for pipes and wires before starting. Plumbing that are accidentally cut can be really messy to fix up. Also, cut wires may result to electrical shock.

Step Two

Build a sturdy case (shaped like a box) for the dumbwaiter. Good quality wood or pine plank box will give the case a finished look.

Step Three

Purchase a ready-made dumbwaiter, or simply make one from an old cupboard or shelving unit. Make sure to place a rim around the base to contain the items and avoid them from sliding off the shelf.

Step Four

Drill holes. Attach beige sash cord to your dumbwaiter. Wrap the cord around the pulleys that are attached to the top of the dumbwaiter’s case on two sides.

Step Five

Attach weights to the cord as a counterbalance to the load. You may experiment with various weights to achieve the right balance for the dumbwaiter.

Step Six

Lastly, have four springs mounted to the base of the case to ensure that the dumbwaiter will not be damaged if in case it falls too rapidly on the bottom floor.

Memory foam the perfect gift for your sweetheart

Memory Foam makes a perfect gift for anyone you know. Your wife, girlfriend or significant other would be thrilled beyond words with any of the many choices of gifts that are available in memory foam.

Memory foam sleep masks make a great, low cost, gift idea for someone who likes it dark in the room they're sleeping in.

They're also ideal for those who enjoy "sleeping in" but don't want the sun shining into their eyes and waking them up in the morning.

How about a memory foam sleep mask as a gift for a shift-worker or someone who likes an afternoon nap to catch up on sleep? They'd always be rested and ready for that big night out on the town.

The non-pressure feel of memory foam makes it a perfect material for sleep masks because the won't cut off circulation and they remain comfortable to the sleeper all night.

Expect to pay from $10 to $30 for a quality memory foam sleep mask.

Another low cost Valentines Day gift idea is a pair of memory foam slippers. These slippers work equally well for her indoors or outdoors.

They're ideal for someone wanting a quick, easy to slip on shoe to run out for the morning paper or to keep your feet cozy and warm while lounging around the house.

The memory foam cradles your feet in comfort by conforming to the exact shape and size of your feet. Warm, cozy and comfortable, these memory foam slippers will make her very happy.

Expect to pay $39 to $79 for this gift.

Memory foam pillows are especially welcome by her because she'll dream of you as she enjoys the cozy custom fitted and supportive feel of the memory foam around her neck and head.

It might even help stave off a "head ache".

Memory foam contour pillows are the ones, you see a lot on television, that have a "roll" on one side to put the proper curved support in your neck while you sleep.

There are normal pillows that are made from memory foam as well, and there are even memory foam body pillows.

The body pillows are especially wonderful for expectant mothers who need special support while sleeping.

There are smaller memory foam travel pillows, either contoured or u-shaped to surround your neck.

Memory foam pillows vary widely in price, but you can expect to pay $79 for the travel size to $165 for a good king size or body pillow.

If you are on a higher limit budget, you might consider a memory foam topper.

Toppers range, in quality, from the very low to the very high.

The low end toppers are made from less dense foam...usually, 2 lb. to 3.5 lb. density, and they don't give you the proper support that you would expect from memory foam.. You can count on the foam returning to it's shape for about 6 or 8 months on the cheaper toppers. After that, they will be pretty worthless.

The better toppers are made from 4 lb. to 5 lb. foam and will hold up for several years. They will give you better support and last much longer than the cheaper ones.

A high density memory foam topper will provide the most support you can expect from a memory foam topper, but they aren't in the same league as a full memory foam mattress set.

Cheaper toppers will, typically be in the $99 to $299 category.

You'll pay $299 to $499 for a middle grade topper and $500 to $900 for the best toppers.

Now matter how you slice it, a gift of memory foam will make you mighty popular with the girl of your dreams.

Top 10 tips for a successful black friday

:
Black Friday is by far the biggest shopping day of the year. Prices are cheap and people start out as early as 5 AM. This year there will be many great deals on gadgets and electronics. Plan ahead and create a winning strategy and you might be able to save a few hundred dollars on your holiday shopping.

Here are 10 tips for making Black Friday successful:

1. Show up early! Seriously, many of the stores that have massive sales will sell out fast. The whole purpose of having super cheap items is to get a ton of people in the door. Then, once they sell all of a particular item the plan is for you to buy a more expensive item. Let me explain this again...Get their early, but c'mon, there is no need to camp out in front of CompUSA with your uncle's moldy tent.

2. Keep an eye on the prices of items that are not on sale. Many times these items will be over priced to compensate for the super cheap advertised items. If the store that you are shopping at has run out of the advertised item, make sure you don't over-spend on a similar product.

3. Beware of cheap brands. Sure, you may be able to find a DVD recorder for $60 but it is made in a country that you have never heard of and will probably break before you finish recording the "Saved by the Bell" marathon. A couple of years ago I stocked up on cheap DVD players and their life span was about 3 months.

4. Make a list of people you are shopping for. If you are like many other people, you will not only be trying to score a great deal for yourself, you will also be shopping for others. Spend some time before the big day to make a list of people who you will be shopping for. Next to their name, include a budget and a gift idea. Make sure you keep this list handy while you are strolling through the stores.

5. Make a list of specific items that you MUST have from the ads. Most black friday advertisements come out on Thanksgiving day. As you browse through the paper, circle the items that you think will sell out and grab those first thing in the morning. You don't want to lie to your 8 year old son on Christmas morning and tell him that Santa ran out of Gameboys...he WILL catch on.

6. Don't overlook the DVDs and CDs for great gifts. Stores such as Wal-Mart should have a few bins of super cheap new releases. Everyone loves movies and music, so take advantage of this cheap-o gift selection and snag as many as you can for the holiday. Trust me, nobody wants another red turtleneck for Christmas!

7. File rebates AS SOON as you get home. Black Friday is known for having tons of rebates. Some products have 4-5 rebates attached to them so make sure you are fully aware of all rebate porchases. Trust me, you will feel like a complete dweeb when you are in need of $200 in the new year and realize that you never sent in any of your rebates. Do it ASAP!

8. Be aware of your store's price matching policy. Many stores will honor the sale price if you bought the item a couple days before. You can simply purchase your items in advance and then simple show up to the customer service area and request a price match...it's that simple.

9. Create a winning team. If you plan on hitting multiple stores, create a team of family or friends to do the shopping. One strategy that works well is to have a driver that drops off family members at each store and then picks them up. Even better would be to take multiple vehicles or car pool with friends. You don't want to finally hit an important store at 3 PM. Think outside the box...plan on getting all shopping done in the morning. Remember, create organized lists for each family member and figure the money situation out the night before.

10. Beware of "sale rage". Some people are so pumped about getting a deal that they will do anything in their power to make sure you come second. If there is only one $50 flat screen monitor left and a soccer mom is sprinting towards it with foam at her mouth, you might just want to skip out on it...she is dangerous.

There you have it...10 tips to make your Black Friday a huge success. Now, here are a few deals that I have my eye on.

1. CompUSA - 9.99 - 512MB USB 2.0 Flash Drive
2. CompUSA - $29.99 - 200 GB 7200 Drive
3. CompUSA - $117.99 - HP 4.1 Megapixel Digital Camera
4. Wal-Mart - $48.88 - Nintendo Game Boy
5. Wal-Mart - $398 - HP Laptop

Traveling safely with children the basics

Safe traveling with children starts with preparing items to bring along with you. First, you should always consider utilizing products from a child safety store. Also, before you leave, label the inside of your child’s clothing. This information should include his or her name, home address and contact number. Also, prepare necessities for the trip. If you will be driving, this should include emergency items such as a tire jack a cell phone; and items for accidents, such as a pack of baby wipes. Thirdly, be certain to carry the proper documents related to car or travel insurance.

Not only should you prepare objects to bring on your trip, but also in regards to the object that will be your means of transportation. If you will travel by car on a lengthy trip, get the car serviced beforehand. Have safety features such as child safety seats checked, as well as mechanical components. Then before you take off in your vehicle, verify that you and your child have buckled your seatbelts. Also, secure all possessions in the car. Moreover, be aware of any child safety signs that you may spot while driving.

If you will be flying on your trip, other precautions should be taken. Learn what is permitted on airplanes, as these guidelines are subject to change. If you are traveling internationally, learn what passport requirements for your child are required. Also, be aware of any child safety signs that are displayed in the aircraft’s cabin.

Whether in a car, planes, or hotel, always prioritize your child’s safety. Never permit your child to play alone—anywhere! Also, make it possible to always recognize your children if they wander off. Bright clothing is advisable, and remember what clothing your kids are currently wearing. Also, do store recent photos of them in your wallet. Next, prepare a plan in the case that you become separated from your children. Additionally, do your homework about hotel childcare programs, and verify whether such programs are licensed.

Lastly, make your trip a healthy one. A first-class first-aid kit is a requisite. Also, use car-window shades, sunglasses and sunblock to protect you and your children when sitting by windows. Absolutely never leave a sleeping child unattended in a car, as the interior can become scorching in just minutes! Furthermore, have your children wash their hands constantly, particularly in germ-infested airplanes and airports. It is also advisable to drink an ample amount of water during trips, and particularly when on airplanes. Various products from a child safety store can further ensure that your child’s health is maintained while traveling.

When traveling with your child, his or her safety should be the number one priority. Taking certain precautions and securing items from child safety store can put you on the road to happy traveling.
