Kitchen faucet buying tips

A durable and stylish kitchen faucet or bath faucet blends together function and aesthetics. The well made faucet makes life a lot easier. Excellent valve mechanism and more durable finishes boost longevity and looks.

Here are six steps in choosing the right faucet for you:

1. Two-handle designs, generally goes for as low as $50, allows you to regulate the temperature more accurately. Having independent control for the hot and cold water makes adjusting the temperature easier.

The single handle faucets also known as post-mount, generally goes for $75 to $200, operate from side-mounted lever or a top-mounted knob. Most single-handle faucets have pullout spouts.

The cross-shaped design and large wing levers are the more popular designs. However, most faucets have different handles that can be attached to a faucet body for a customized look.

2. If the style of the faucet is important, begin your choosing with the type of finish. The most affordable finish for a faucet is a chrome finish. Usually priced around $60. The chrome-finish has a long warranty on scratches.

The more colorful enamel coatings generally will cost you from $20 to $200 more, and are more susceptible to scratches and chipping. Add 25 to 40 percent more to the price of coated faucets for stainless steel faucets.

3. A PVD (physical vapor deposition) finish is better than usual plated finishes but add $150 to $750 more in costs. The PVD finish is done by vaporizing the metal and glazing it with a scratch-resistant and non-tarnishing film.

Look at brushed chrome, oil-rubbed bronze and satin nickel for a rustic appeal. The brushed finish and satin finish cleverly hides scratches.

4. There are more to spouts aside from the standard straight faucets. There are high-arching goose-like spouts, great for filling pots. A pull-out faucet can get you anywhere in a sink with three-bowls. You can go from a spray mode to a stream mode with a touch. There are also restaurant-type models for those extra long hoses.

5. Know that there are four kinds of faucets.

a. The compression valve:

The compression valve uses rubber washers. The compression valve type of faucet will eventually leak but they are typically easy to repair.

b. The ball valves:

The ball valve controls the flow and temperature of the water by using a steel ball. The ball valves are washerless and easy to maintain because of this. Replacing a ball valve is readily affordable and easy to do.

c. The ceramic disk

The ceramic disk is virtually a maintenance free water faucet. It is guaranteed not to wear out but is obviously much more expensive than the ball valve or compression valve.

d. The cartridge faucet

Much like the ceramic disk, the cartridge faucet usually does not need any maintenance. Just like the ceramic disk, it has a hefty price tag.

Regardless of the type of faucet you choose. Always check the warranty and the finish.

6. You may opt for filtering faucets, costing $200 plus, to bring in purified water. Several filters are placed under the sink while others are fitted inside the spout. To set the maximum water temperature, an anti-scald faucet can be used. An electronic faucet with an infrared sensor is also available. They save on water and allow for cleaner handles.

In general, you don't need to hand over your hard earned money to pay for good quality. Most faucets have the same basic parts and sometimes even the same finish across several price lines.

To have a streamlined, urban look, choose a faucet that is mounted on the wall, this is often used with vanity bowls.

Be sure that your faucet connection matches your sink holes. If they don't match, you'll have to provide more drill holes or cover the unused holes using an escutcheon plate.

All faucets in general carry at least one year warranties. Even the low-end models carry at least one year of warranty. Many faucets carry a warranty by the manufacturer that is more than one year.

Good luck choosing the perfect faucet for you.

Finding the right window cleaning service

Washing your own windows can be an unwelcome chore. It can also be dangerous if you have windows that are tall or higher than the ground floor. Using long ladders to access them can be pose a risk to your health. Washing windows is also a time-consuming and tedious task. Without the proper equipment, it can take much longer and not be as high quality as if you went with a window cleaning service. Window cleaning services specialize in safely and effectively cleaning windows. They will have the necessary tools and supplies to complete a quality job. Before hiring one, there are several things to consider.

Many home cleaning companies also offer window washing as an added service. There are also those that specialize strictly in window washing. Either one is acceptable as long as they have the necessary experience. An experienced window washer will ask a variety of questions or take a visual inspection before quoting on the project. Determining cost factors include the type of windows, quantity, size and amount of dirt. Some types of windows will require specialized cleaning and especially dirty windows may require power washing, which can increase the expense.

Choose a window washer who is fully insured and bonded. There is potential for damage if windows are not cleaned properly, so ensure you are covered. Make sure you get an estimate in writing. This should include a detailed description of the work to be done, the cost for the project and time frame for completion. Also be sure they have proper equipment to protect surrounding areas for damage and that they are responsible for thoroughly cleaning up after the job is complete.

Ask friends or family for recommendations. Obtain several quotes before deciding on a company. Make sure the company will provide a free estimate. This is standard but it is wise to verify before incurring any unnecessary costs. Ask for references and follow up on them to ensure they have happy customers. A service that has been in business for a long time is a better option than a newly formed one because they will have a proven track record.

Window washing can be a time consuming, difficult chore. Many people opt to hire a window cleaning service as opposed to doing it themselves. With a good company, you will get a job that shows quality work completed in a timely manner. They will be able to accomplish the job safely and assure you that any damages will be taken care of.

Reducing energy costs

Future natural gas prices are expected to be higher, but demand will grow more slowly than in previous projections, according to the Energy Information Administration's latest annual long-term forecast, the "Annual Energy Outlook 2006."

Additionally, residential consumption of natural gas is projected to fall by 6 percent from 2005 levels this year but increase by 7.7 percent in 2007, the EIA says.

Energy conservation would help those cooling bills now and in the future. To help save energy:

* Put curtains on your windows to keep out the sun.

* Install a thermostat that will automatically adjust temperatures. Set it for 75 degrees in the summer when you are at home and raise it when you are out.

* Turn off lights, appliances and electrical equipment when not in use. Do your baking, washing, drying and ironing early in the morning or the evening.

* Clean or replace the filter for your air conditioner.

* Let dishes air dry in the dishwasher.

Costs related to natural gas consist of four main components: production, transmission, distribution and commodity price as determined by the marketplace.

When the gas is produced, it is transmitted over long distances by pipeline from the wellhead to a local gas company. Once at the gas company, it is stored and then distributed to local customers. The price of natural gas consumed is determined by supply, demand and other market conditions.

The Gulf of Mexico supplies 25 percent of domestic natural gas that is consumed in the U. S. But 11 percent of Gulf production is still blocked due to damage from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Twenty-three percent of natural gas goes to home use and 27 percent goes to electricity generation. Companies like Mammoth Resource Partners Inc., a Kentucky-based oil and gas exploration company, are striving to put a dent in skyrocketing natural gas prices by tapping into the gas-rich Appalachian Basin.

"While people are facing ever-increasing energy costs, investors recognize that within these increases exists a greater investment potential," says Roger L. Cory, president of Mammoth Resource Partners.

How to choose the best dehumidifier

The dehumidifier is considered as an air conditioner that has coils to remove the moisture from the air. Its coils come with hot and cold and a fan that would let the air conditioner to condense the moisture created by the cold coils of the dehumidifier. It will then produce a dry air that will go through the hot coil to bring back its original temperature.

The dehumidifier is not anymore needed if there is an air conditioner available in the room. The air conditioner may do the process of dehumidifying the moisture in the room. Most households experience some problems when there is too much and too little moisture in the air.

This is the reason why many encounter problems of dry skin and itchy skin. The discomfort of having an air that is too dry may also lead to the cracking of furniture surfaces. The blocking of nasal passages would also be experienced because of the dry air produced by the moisture.

An air that is slightly wet can also cause the same problems on the skin and to the nasal passages. The continuous condensation of the moisture in windows, the expansion of molds, and the cause of rotten wood products is the effect of the dry air that is not removed. That is why it is important to have a dehumidifier in the house. To have an idea on what kind of dehumidifier to choose, here are some dehumidifier purchase costs:

1. It can be an option to have a dehumidifier that is a heat pump. These items are more complex because they are only limited. The prices of these dehumidifiers are affordable. It is advisable to buy when springtime comes where $50 to $100 of savings is offered to buyers in this season.

2. Find a dehumidifier that has a two-speed fan. These units produce less noise and gives low humidity that lessens the efficiency factor. Try to check the units before buying it. Consider the noise it produces if in case the unit will be placed near the bedrooms.

3. Buy units of dehumidifiers that have a rating of 10 L (21 U. S. pints or 2.1 imperial gallon) a day. These units may fit on those small houses that have an average moisture resistance. Their prices may range from $200 to $250 per unit. While those dehumidifiers that have 20 L (42 U. S. pints or 4.2 imperial gallons) a day rating can cost $250 to $300 per unit. These units are best for big and town houses.

4. It is not advisable to buy chemical absorbent dehumidifiers. These units are only suitable for places that have hot and weather climates.

5. Look for the (EF) or the Efficiency Factor of the unit. This is the guide to know the amount of the dehumidifier’s operation cost. There are provided information on the brochure of the unit where the operator’s manual can give the instruction on how to get the EF. There is also a label that will indicate the EF if there are no manuals available on the brochure. The label can be found at the back of the water collection bucket section.

This information on dehumidifiers may help buyers how to choose the right unit for their home. Always check the manufacturer’s reputation on selling the said product. Always look for the quality of the unit and ask for the guarantees and warranties of the unit.

Hardwood floor care

In order to enjoy the full benefits of a hardwood floor, you have to apply the right maintenance techniques. Since hard wood, no matter how sturdy, is organic, it can be susceptible to wear and decay if you do not take care of it. Thus, if you want it to last for a long time, you must be diligent enough to maintain it with proper cleaning and waxing.

Hardwood floors are somewhat expensive. And because they are an investment, it is but prudent to make sure that you get the maximum value for your money as the years progress. Thus, we face the question. How do we take care of our hardwood floors? Consider the tips below.

- Avoid too much sun exposure

If the room where your hardwood floor is has a large window, protect it from the sun using sheer curtains or blinds. Ultra violet rays are said to have ill effects on hardwood floors.

- Don't drag your furniture around

This pertains particularly to the large furniture. If you want to move your oak sofa to another location, use a dolly or have people lift it. Never drag it across the floor as it may scar the finish or dig deep into the wood itself. Also, use felt contacts under the furnitures' legs to prevent their weight from creating scratches and dents on the flooring.

- Clean up spills and stain immediately.

If your hardwood floor has a good and intact finish, then you have nothing to worry about. But if it has already been there for a while, the finishing might already be stripped off and allow the water to seep into the wood. When this happens, sanding and refinishing the part of the floor that got wet is a good idea. If this technique fails, you might have to replace that particular plank with a new one.

- Sweep your hardwood floor regularly

Use a broom with fine exploded bristles as they are most effective in trapping grit and dust from the creases and corners of your flooring. Broom bristles that are too soft might only drag the dust further into your flooring and fill the cracks.

In conclusion, the way you care for your hardwood floor should mirror how you care for things you value. Your hardwood floor not only provides physical beauty to your home but also ushers in a sense of homey comfort that will forever be absent with a concrete floor.

Hide your floors

Leather flooring is one of the most luxurious and decadent flooring imaginable. Walk bare-foot and the surface immediately adjusts to your body temperature. It feels warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It also, never loses that wonderful, pleasing leather scent. Over time, the increased wear creates the appearance of rich patina, or the look that gives leather its unique character.

Leather tiles are available in a myriad of earthy colors as well as custom shades, inlay, laser engraving and embossing. They are approximately 1/8" thick and come in all sizes. Go for the standard 12"x12", 24"x24" or go for decorative borders, inserts, herringbone patters or custom layouts. Design choices are limited only by your imagination.

In addition to flooring, leather makes a luxurious covering for wall paneling or even crown molding. The styles range from traditional and sophisticated, to modern and contemporary.

Leather tiles work well in most areas of the house, adding a rich and inviting feel to a dining room or living room. They create a warm and relaxing atmosphere in a sitting room or library, and work well in media rooms because leather is great for sound control. The comfort of walking barefoot on these floors makes it a popular choice for the bedroom. Installation in the kitchen or bathroom is not suggested, due to the large amount of moisture, and harsh cleaners the tiles would be subjected to.

Maintenance

When first installed, the tiles require an initial coating of paste wax followed by two or three coats of bowling alley wax. It’s very important to apply the paste wax first or you may get a white haze on the leather. Subsequent tile maintenance is fairly easy; consisting of a regular dry dust mopping and intermittent damp mopping for general cleaning. Spills should be wiped up immediately to avoid any build of moisture for an extended period of time.

Things to avoid

Never wax leather wall tiles.

Refrain from using abrasive cleaners, soap, furniture polish, varnish, solvent, ammonia products, or wax containing a high concentration of Carnauba.

Never place rubber backed or non-ventilated rugs, rug padding or mats on top of the leather.

Exposing the tiles to direct sunlight for extended periods of time may cause fading or color variations.

Installation

Leather tiles can be glued to any wood or concrete surface. Painted or treated floors need to be sanded or roughed up prior to installation to ensure the glue will adhere to the surface. Floors need to be clean, level, with any cracks filled and sanded. Just one grain of sand will surface under the tile, making it appear larger.

The glue should be a non-flammable water based adhesive applied to both the back of the tile and the floor. Once it has dried to the touch, it can be pressed in place. Leather tiles are prone to curling and shrinkage, so it’s imperative the tiles are stuck extremely tight.

How to create that tropical paradise in your bathroom

When you have decided that you need a tropical getaway in your home that you can enjoy everyday, try designing a tropical bathroom. Not only is this room small enough to create a cozy, island view, but it is a place that you use on a daily basis to relax and start your day. Here are some ideas on how you can turn your bathroom into a tropical paradise:

Canopies: by purchasing some very lightweight material, either white or off-white, you can create some great canopies in your bathroom. Start by measuring the bathtub or shower for the length of material that you will need to use. Once you have cut the material (don't worry about a hem at the bottom!), you will need to get a hammer and some light tacks or small nails so you don't tear the material. Next, start at one corner of the bathtub and fold the side of the material to create about a quarter-inch thick area to tack to the ceiling or wall. You can decide just how far up your canopy goes.

Then, allow part of the material to drape a little, creating a relaxed atmosphere, and do the same kind of fold and tack on the opposite side of the tub or shower. Allow the material to hang to the ground around the tub. Now, you can either get some fake tropical flowers to pin back the sides of your new canopy or you can find some other tropical material to use as a tie. Either way, you create a unique look. If your material is a bit frayed at the bottoms, great! This only ads to the tropical look, since the more “perfect” it looks, the more fake it will look. Top it off with some strands of ivy or palm leaves around the top of the canopy to finish off the look.

Greenery: depending on the size of your bathroom, placing a few fake palm trees (nothing huge) around the room or placing some smaller greenery, either real or fake, will add to the tropical theme. If you decide to go with some fake plants, you can find them at any local discount shop in any size that you desire. Make sure that you don't clutter your bathroom too much, or you will defeat the purpose of buying these plants in the first place. If you need to go with smaller plants, you can opt for real or fake. By going with fake, you take out all the upkeep with watering and clipping, but if you go with real, it will help to finish out the tropical look. Ivy plants work best in this setting since they will thrive on the moisture, are cheap to buy, and don't require any direct sunlight. You can also purchase strands of fake ivy or palm to top off your canopies or line the top corners of your bath to help create more greenery without using up space.

Tropical dйcor: by purchasing some smaller, tropical themed items to display around your bathroom, you will finish off your tropical theme. You don't have to go overboard, just a few decorative towels, soap and toothbrush holders, and a few inexpensive prints scattered here and there will complete any tropical theme.

I hope that these few tips on creating a tropical paradise in your bathroom have helped to inspire some creative juices in you and get you working on your own paradise to enjoy! Happy decorating!

Flood-proof flooring

Flood risks can be substantially reduced with the selection of new technology flooring and wall coverings using water proof, mold and mildew resistant materials like epoxy coatings. These coatings have been used successfully in swimming pools, laundries, warehouses, garages, and various types of shops for decades. Now they are being used increasingly in living spaces.

Flooded epoxy floors can be pressure washed and scrubbed back into service in minutes. Mold, bacteria, and contaminants can be rinsed off, with floors ready for occupancy within hours. These flooring

surfaces are class III laboratory qualified, meaning the surfaces are impervious to penetration by liquid-born contaminants. Even diesel, gas, and oil will not penetrate them and can be washed or wiped up.

Old technology flooring, including carpeting, vinyl tile, linoleum, and wood, are subject to such severe contamination and damage, that after flooding, they are essentially unrecoverable. Carpeting and wood often harbor health-damaging bacteria, mold, and mildew after being flooded. Sewer, petroleum, and many types of organic matter brought into living spaces by floodwaters all need to be neutralized and removed.

The costs of flood remediation often include the labor expenses of removal, hauling and landfill expenses, as well as contamination cleanup and replacement costs.

It is not just floors within flood plains or hurricane areas that are at risk from flooding. Plumbing problems, from overflowing bathtub or laundry and kitchen appliances, can create the same damage as natural disasters. Sewage and other contaminants need to be removed; warped and shrunken surfaces have to be repaired or replaced.

New designs in homes offer beautiful flood-proof epoxy coated flooring from wall to wall, often including coated vertical surfaces to help further contain flood waters. Area rugs create an elegant look on top of these easy-to-maintain surfaces.

The beauty of epoxy flooring can enhanced and personalized by using colors. Colored chips, glitter, decorative stains, and artwork and decals can be laminated into these attractive floors. Epoxy flooring is a solid choice when rebuilding or remediating flood prone properties or living spaces.

Kits of materials are customized to owner specification and delivered directly to the job site. Kits include full directions and 24/7 help lines staffed by seasoned flooring experts, so professionals and amateurs alike can successfully install a quality floor.

Web visitors can obtain free, job-specific quotes on materials or nationwide turnkey installations by completing a simple questionnaire at concrete-floor-coatings. com.

Tips for purchasing a luxurious comforter

Snuggling under the covers and pulling your warm and cozy comforter up to your chin is so enjoyable on cold winter nights. When the comforter is a luxurious, beautiful one, it feels even better. There are several popular types of luxurious comforters available and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

When most people think of luxurious comforters, they picture white plushy down filled bed covers. These comforters are so soft and so warm that it’s no wonder they are very popular. If you have been afraid to use a down comforter because you are concerned that someone in your family will be allergic to down, you may be pleasantly surprised to know that new cleaning methods have been developed that help remove allergens and debris from down to make it hypoallergenic.

If you love down, but you have a polyester budget, then you may want to look for a synthetic down comforter. These comforters are filled with special material that feels almost as soft and warm as real down.

And there are lots of choices of duvet covers to choose for you down or synthetic down comforter so you can easily match your dйcor or change it whenever you want. Duvet covers also help keep a down comforter or synthetic down comforter clean so you won’t need to have them professionally cleaned as often.

If a down comforter is not quite your style, you may want to look for a sophisticated satin comforter instead. These comforters come in a wide range of brilliant jewel tone colors, but you can also find them in classic black. Of course, satin can be a bit slippery and doesn’t breathe well.

Silk comforters are quite beautiful, but aren’t as slippery as satin. Silk comforters are very lightweight, but this doesn’t stop them from being warm and cozy. With the increase in environmental awareness, these quilts made with natural fibers are really growing in popularity. However, silk comforters require special care, so don’t wash them without checking the cleaning instructions on the care tag.

Suede comforters are perfect for a masculine bedroom, but are a bit on the heavy side. If you are concerned about caring for a suede comforter, you may want to consider a micro-suede comforter instead. Micro-suede looks like real suede, but is easier to care for and much lighter. While suede rarely is quilted, you can find quite a few micro-suede comforters with quilted designs.

If none of these luxurious comforters are right for you, you may want to take a close look at velvet comforters. These comforters provide a sumptuous, warm night’s sleep. Just be prepared to have your quilt professionally cleaned if it is made with velvet.

Whichever comforter you choose, you’ll be sure to sleep better when you are feeling warm and cozy.

Energy-saving daylight for dark spaces

There's light at the end of the utility bill tunnel, thanks to an easy-to-install skylight that not only brings light to dark spaces, but also helps cut energy costs. That savings is not insignificant, as Americans spend 20 percent of their electricity bills on lighting their home.

Called tubular skylights, they are ideal for situations where there just is not enough light and the homeowner doesn't want to install a more traditional lighting system, explains a spokesman for ODL, the Michigan company that makes the skylights. They're perfect for bathrooms, hallways, closets, laundry rooms and just about any room in the house.

Easy To Install

In addition to being Energy-Star qualified, the skylight is also easy for homeowners and contractors to install. A new two-piece installation kit makes installing the skylight simple because the bottom adjustable tube overlaps the top adjustable tube. Just cut a hole in the ceiling and a corresponding one on the roof. Slide in the dome flashing under the roof shingles and attach the reflective tubes. Cap them with the ceiling covering. You may download detailed instructions and watch video clips at odl. com/sky lights.

The skylight features a patented Solar Lens Dome, which increases light through the tube. During the full midday sun, a 10-inch tubular skylight lights up 150 square feet of space with a solar throughput equal to about three 100-watt bulbs. The 14-inch tubular skylight is designed to light up 300 square feet-an output equal to about five 100-watt bulbs.

ODL also offers a 10-inch and 14-inch Severe Weather Tubular Skylight, for areas where hail or hurricanes are common.

Exclusive luxury bedding

:
One of the pleasures of having your own space is the enjoyment of providing luxury bedding for your sleeping arrangements. Luxury bedding means different things to different people, but at the very least it means having something special to sleep on. It doesn’t even have to be expensive. Luxury bedding can simply be a texture, color or style you enjoy.

Some people consider the feel of silk sheets to be the ultimate in luxury. The natural fiber against the skin gives a sensation of elegance like no other. Silk sheets as a item of luxury bedding needs about the same level of care you provide your silk blouses and scarves. It’s definitely not something to throw in the regular cycle of the washing machine with hot water.

Silk sheet sets come in a variety of colors and weights and are often sold as part of complete bedding set including sheets, comforter, pillow cases, shams and perhaps even a dust ruffle. Other silk sheet sets are more tailored in appearance, relying on color and feel to set the tone of the luxury bedding.

Other people choose luxury bedding of Egyptian cotton in Italian designed linens. The heavy cotton sometimes relies on woven patterns in the fabric to add texture and richness. These may take the form of stripes of regular and satiny texture in a white on white pattern for example. The warmth and durability of the quality Egyptian cotton means you can have luxury that wears well and can stand laundering without special handling.

At a minimum luxury bedding will have a high thread count. Ordinary bedding will have a thread count of 180 to 200. Luxury bedding might have a thread count of over 1200. Obviously the higher the thread count, the more luxurious the look and feel of the sheets.

Luxury bedding for many people is satin sheets, They claim to sleep better because when turning or moving on these sheets, they don’t pull at the clothing and skin as some of the regular bedding does. The drawback to some satin sheets is that they require more care when laundering than do cotton bedding.

Part of the enjoyment of luxury bedding is the wide range of colors available now. You can find bedding sets in almost any color you can imagine from neon to white and with flowers, stripes or solid colors. Theme bedding is available if you want a bit of whimsy with your luxury.

Replacing chandelier parts

Chandeliers add an elegance and style to a room that no other lighting fixture can even come close to. It is not surprising that when a chandeleir gets old or broken that it is not just thrown away, but repaired. Replacing chandelier parts takes precision and careful shopping. One bad part and the whole chandeleir can lose it’s charm.

Usually when replacing parts on a chandelier, only some parts are being replaced. It is important to make sure that any new parts match the old parts. Doing this involves careful consideration of size and shape. Even the slightest difference in a decorative part could throw the whole chandeleir off in apperance. When it comes to other parts that make up the actual construction, wrong sizing could spell disaster. To ensure correct parts are chosen, measuring should be done in a meticulous fashion. It is important to measure exact lengths and widths. If possible, take the piece to be replaced so it can be compared at the store.

Quality is another important consideration when choosing replacement chandelier parts. Quality does not mean it has to be expensive. It should look similar to the other chandeleir parts. A cheaply made piece will look completely out of place amoungst pieces of high quality. It is posible to find less expensive parts that are of an equal quality to the original parts.

Chandeleir parts can be found in many different types of stores. Some parts may be found at a general department store in their lighting or hardware sections. Mostly hardware should be bought at department stores because the look of these parts is not as important. The decorative parts found at a department store may not match exactly or may look cheap against the original parts. The best place to find decorative parts is at a store that sells chandeleirs and has specialized chandelier parts available. The bottom line is not to forget that the new parts should match the old parts.

The biggest challenge when replacing chandlelier parts is making the new match the old. The main factors of size, shape and quality make a huge impact on the chandeleir. Replacement parts should be carefully matched to the old parts so that they are not noticable. Parts should be bought with the finished piece in mind. The chandeleir should look as good with replacement parts as it did when it was brand new.

Bathroom renovations

Several unwanted challenges arise when updating older type bathrooms from the ancient plumbing leading into the shower cabin, bath or sink to water damaged flooring. You never know what you will find once you start dissecting the bathroom. When you lift up that old ceramic or vinyl flooring, don’t be surprised as to what could be lurking beneath the surface. I recently completed a home renovation tour with a local home contracting company, because I would soon be tackling my own bathroom renovations and wanted to ensure nothing was left to chance since I would be doing most of the work myself.

Turning my focus to the bathroom renovation project, I was taken back a few steps by what I saw and quickly realized, if initially the job is not done correctly, you will actually spend more money in the repair process. Since the ceramic tiling was not properly laid, severe water damaged occurred over time and was in desperate need of replacing, the mortar was not spread evenly across the floor boards which gave way to rotted plywood and ultimately lead to having to start from scratch. If you are not a professional and need advice on proper installation techniques, local hardware stores often hold weekend classes on a number of different home renovation projects. From the installation of new showers enclosures, bath panels or shower cubicles, everything you need to know for your bathroom renovation project. Investing a few hours of your time to get it right the first time will pay off in the long term or if you are looking to hire an expert, before you do, thoroughly research past home contracting projects and get references from various sources.

Hire a Bathroom Contractor to do your renovations

If you have friends or relatives that have had any work done using a home contracting company, go out and have a look at the workmanship. I had the opportunity of visiting an older home that was completely renovated, where the home contracting company took on the huge undertaking of ripping out and installing new bathroom furniture, a new bathroom suite, and new ceramic flooring. The project was granted to Pano Sofianos of Rombus. ca Home Contracting Ltd., located in Toronto, Canada who has been in the home renovation business for several decades and sets the precedent in superior craftsmanship.

A perfectionist and extremely meticulous when it comes to doing the job right, Pano Sofianos never leaves anything to chance. The picturesque bathroom looked like it belonged on the front cover of Better Homes and Gardens, the well-finished bathroom included a beautiful corner bath for space conservation, a traditional fixed rain shower head, wall mounted bathroom storage cabinets, new bathroom vanity and earthy colored ceramic floor tiling. When the bathroom was completed it was a professional design that provided a tranquil space that included subtle variations of wall colors, woodwork and bathroom cabinets all of which visually enhanced the look of the bathroom and gave the appearance of spaciousness. It is highly recommended if you get the opportunity to see first-hand the previous work of a home renovation firm as I did in the case of Rombus. ca Contracting, this will help in the selection process based on pricing and the quality of work.

Sign a contract with your bathroom design firm

Before signing off with your home contractor, scrutinize their work under a magnifying glass, look for the slightest cracks and furrows in the ceramic tiles, examine the grouting, caulking around bathtub, showers, sinks and any cabinetry along with any imperfections in the walls, remember once the home contractor disappears from the worksite, it can be difficult to get them back to the home to make repairs. It is also vitally important to draft a binding contract between the homeowner and the company you are contemplating hiring for your bathroom renovation project and don’t sign on any dotted line until you are completely satisfied with their work ethics and policies. You want to make sure the company you hire will return to the worksite to make any necessary repairs should something go wrong with the bathroom installation from the plumbing to the flooring, being consumer smart will protect your investment.
