If your bedroom is large enough, buy three big trash cans, about the 30 gallon size. If you can buy them in different colors, that would be ideal, but in lieu of that, what if you just spray one white; one a dark color, like navy blue or black; and one red?

Every day when you take off your clothes, decide whether they should go into the bin for white clothes, the bin for dark clothes, or the bin for colored clothes and then, just throw your stuff into the appropriate bin. How cool is that? They'll already be separated when it comes time to wash them. Plus, there's the added benefit of not walking into your bedroom and tripping over a pair of underpants.

For shoes, you can do the same kind of thing. Buy open-ended (veggie-type) bins so the shoes are easier to see, maybe one black, one brown, one colored, or just one, period. Books need bookshelves, and people with ADD need plenty of space in them to store their books. Have one as close to your desk as possible and be sure not to overload the shelves. If a book won't fit, get rid of another so that it will and don't let your attention deficit get in the way. ADD people tend to the pack rat syndrome, too. If you haven't used the book about the joys of cooking blowfish in 6 months, you probably won't. Get rid of it, or get another bookcase.

Then, tackle those sticky papers. Get a small notebook that will fit on your desk beside you. You can buy inexpensive books or whatever you like. If you really like the book, your ADD brain will use it. But any note that you have to make during the day should go into that book--everything. Telephone numbers, quick notes to yourself, addresses. So make sure it can open flat and that pages can be turned back. Your attention deficit may drive you to that purple suede journal, but if it's like a hardback book, it won't work well. Get something that's more ADD convenient.

Then, either at the end of the day or the next morning--whatever works, but make it a routine--transfer what needs to go into your address book to your address book. Use a desk calendar, too. Write all of your appointments into the calendar and keep it directly in front of you every day. You can't make any mistakes that way, and all of your notes will be in one place if you need to refer to them later on. No more ADD panic over where you put that important phone number!

As for the papers. Gather all of them, and you'll have to take time to sort them into piles: important, not quite as important, and throw away. Because your attention deficit won't do well with the boredom this will create, get yourself a timer. Set it for 5 minutes. Go through your papers for 5 minutes every morning, then stop. Don't go one minute over. Take 5 minutes a day to file your papers in hanging files in a file cabinet or box. You'll be amazed at how much you get done in that short time. Before you know it, your paper stack will be gone.

But you'll be adding to the piles every day. Get three file bins for papers and just toss papers into one of the bins as they're received. After a while doing this, it will take less than 5 minutes to clear things up each day. How great will that be?

All these villages exhibit a community spirit and it is fascinating to watch the older gentlemen of the village gather at the local coffee shop to play cards, backgammon or set the world to rights. The recent headlines about the kidnapping of 21 South Korean missionaries in Afghanistan has brought shock and outrage in many parts of the world. The killing of two missionaries who were part of that group further heightened the tension in South Korea. However, the most disturbing scene that came out of that incident was the video of the wailing parents who pleaded for the lives of their children who were made prisoners by the Taliban. One Korean mother even pleaded that she be taken by the Taliban in place of her daughter. Such is the love of a parent for a child.

The news also brought to the fore the truth that there is no fear that haunts any parent more than the possibility of losing a child. The case of a lost or missing child, at least, provides the possibility of reunion. But the death of a son or daughter has a certain finality, a point of no return. Moreover, a child dying before the parent is simply looked at as an anomaly, a completely tragic and unnatural event. Regardless of country or culture, parents always believe that they are supposed to die before their children.

All parents, at some point in life, would think about death and the day when they would finally leave their children. It is a painful thought that no parent would dare dwell on except perhaps when one is seriously ill or so advanced in age. But what causes even more stress and anxiety is the thought of losing a child.

Parents normally see themselves as completely responsible for raising their children which entails going to work in order to raise money for food, shelter, clothing, and school expenses. Beyond the material things, parents also seriously take their role as the first teachers of their children. Before they die, they want to see their children finish school, and if possible, get married and start a family of their own. This, for most parents, is the natural law and cycle of human life.

Losing a child during pregnancy or during the delivery....in an accident...in war... or because of a violent crime...all these tragic events cause untold grief and depression not only for the parents but for the rest of the family. Seeing a child die is a scene that causes deep emotional pain that could scar for life. The distress caused by losing a loved one, especially a young child, can hurt so much that a parent could even temporarily lose the ability to think rationally. With the loss of appetite and sleeplessness, a grieving parent also loses interest in relating with other people, even those from their own family. The depression totally takes over the life of a grieving mother or father, debilitating them physically and emotionally.

During a wake, most people try to give the grieving parent some words of encouragement. But these words often do not help and may even make it more difficult for them. Some would even say, “It's all right...death is part of life,” or “Everything will be okay. At least, your son is now in heaven.” These words often add more hurt rather than comfort to the grieving parent. For this reason, it is important to understand that a grieving parent or any person who lost a loved one undergoes a grieving process. This process involves the following stages: denial, sadness and depression, anger, and acceptance. A parent who first learns about the death of a child will be filled with shock. This will be followed by denial – a psychological defense mechanism that is intent on blocking the sad news about the death of a child. Once the parent is able to understand that the child has really died, the next set of emotions to come will be sadness and depression. At this stage, the parent would usually reminisce about the times spent with the child --- from the time that the child was born, to birthdays, holidays, and other happy memories. These thoughts tend the deepen the sadness and depression of the parent. In some cases, the depression can be so severe that a grieving parent may have to be given anti-depressant prescriptions. After some time, anger may set in and makes it even possible for the grieving parent to blame God for the death of the child. After this stage of anger, which is the most emotionally heightened period of the grieving process, the parent will eventually accept the situation and the death of the child.

It will take some more time but emotional healing is eventually attained. The length it takes to have emotional healing, of course, depends on the ability and willingness of the parent. Some find it hard to let go, while others are able to move on because of their emotional and spiritual stability.

Indeed, there are no words that can comfort a parent who just lost a child. It takes time, a lot of prayer, and acceptance to get over the death of a son or a daughter. In reality, a parent never really gets over the death of a child. Moving on is not about forgetting the child but about embracing death as an inevitable part of life --- and about retaining the best and happiest memories they had together even if the child has passed on and the parent still has to continue living.

My trip to traveler s health care utopia

Everything was going swimmingly: I got my passport, found a cheap flight, and got my two weeks off of work. I was ready for the ultimate vacation. On a tip from a friend of mine, I decided on a package tour of Meditopia, an island nation often called the jewel of the South Pacific. The brochure sent to me by Meditopia Adventure Travel displayed pristine white sand beaches, lush jungle waterfalls, charming locals, and, strangely, a photograph of their brand new hospital. ‘Our health care is free to all,’ the caption under the photo read. An avid scuba diver and lover of nature, this obscure nation seemed to provide it all.

I connected to Meditopia Air flight number 13 from Bangkok, and after sixteen hours of travel, I arrived into Healthiopolis Airport. Customs was a pretty standard procedure, although it was strange when the official seemed disappointed that I did not have any pre-existing medical conditions.

As it turned out, I arrived in the middle of monsoon season. Despite securing a very quick and efficient taxi to the hotel, I was soaking wet and shivering by the time I reached the front desk. I wasn’t going to let some rains dampen my spirit: I celebrated the first night of my vacation with a couple pork dumplings known to be a local delicacy. Before long I was dreaming of the swimming, hiking, and diving I would be doing.

The next morning, I awoke to an intense, pounding headache, a severe sore throat, sweats, and a case of diarrhea the likes of which I never had before. It was terrible, and I wasn’t sure if it was the rain that soaked me or the dumplings I had eaten the night before. There was a knock on my door.

“Meditopia Adventure Travel! I am your guide! Good morning!” a bubbly voice called.

“I am sorry, I’m very sick,” I sputtered, opening the door.

“Sir, you are not well!” a portly, amiable looking local said.

“Yes, perhaps I should sleep it off,” I tried to close the door, but the guide would not let me.

“We must take you to our brand new hospital, sir,”

“No, no, I don’t have any insurance,” I said, “at least none that would be accepted here.”

“Sir, you must understand that here, in Meditopia, we pride ourselves in our free health care. Even Yankee travelers such as yourself can get access to our state of the art facilities.”

I did not believe him, but before long I found myself in an ambulance, on the way to the hospital. Wrapped in blankets, upon entry to the hospital, I tried to fish out my HMO card, but the exceedingly friendly nurse waved it away. I waited no more than ten minutes before a two Doctors waved me into an examination room. In my feverish delirium, I continued to wave around my insurance card, knowing full well that my plan had no coverage for foreign hospitals. The doctors diagnosed my acute food poisoning, and set me up with a lavish hospital room, as well as a free prescription for the necessary antibiotics. Good lord, I tried to give the staff money every time they visited, but they refused.

I spent my entire vacation recovering in the hospital ward; it was amazing. There wasn’t even any paperwork for me to fill out. This land of Meditopia was the perfect place to get sick. Feeling refreshed, rested, and thankfully, in peak physical condition, I boarded the plane hoping to get sick here, again sometime.

Motivational wisdom from a chef rat - part ii

Welcome to Part II of "Motivational Wisdom from a Chef Rat" where Disney movie Ratatouille's star and uber management guru, Remy the Rat, shares his motivational wisdom and inspirational insights:

> BE REAL - BE YOURSELF

When Anton Ego, France's most notorious food critic who can make or break a restaurant with a single review, makes his appearance at Gusteau's, Remy's culinary talents are finally put to the test.

But instead of preparing a fancy delicacy worthy of Gusteau's esteemed patrons, Remy chooses to make a homily Ratatouille (a vegetable stew made of eggplant, tomatoes, green peppers, and squash). It's a common folk meal fit "for peasants" the assistant cook declares.

Remy ignores this slight and goes with his heart. It's genuinely him and what he knows. He prepares an exquisitely rapturous, mouth-watering Ratatouille dish that just blows away the critic. As Ego takes his first bite, his cold exterior immediately melts in delight as he is brought back to sweet memories of his Mom's home-cooking.

This was an emotional scene for me as well. In my case, it brought back sweet memories of my father's home-cooking. My father passed away in a car accident eighteen years ago, and yet, I can still fondly remember savoring his Ratatouille. It was one of my father's favorites and he used to brag all the time about knowing how to make this French specialty. My brothers and I used to laugh as kids at the funny sounding name and how my father would roll the word off his tongue with such relish.

Bottom line: be yourself and ignore the critics.

> TALENT CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE

When Linguini (I don't come up with these names), the supposed up-and-coming star boy chef at Gusteau's, reveals that the real inspiration behind his cooking is Remy the Rat, the entire staff thinks he's lost his mind and promptly leave the establishment.

Lesson: the best talent and ideas can come from anywhere and sometimes do come from the most unexpected places.

Don't pre-judge people. Just because someone's a rat doesn't mean they can't cook!

Likewise, don't be easily impressed by degrees, pedigrees, fancy titles, wealth, or so called experts. You have to carefully evaluate whether their talent or ideas will help move YOUR career or business forward. Sometimes that means seeking a second or third opinion.

> CHECK YOUR EGO AT THE DOOR

When famed critic, Anton Ego, asks to personally speak with the head chef of Gusteau's, he is told to wait.

Check your ego at the door and tell it to wait. Don't let success get to your head. And give credit where credit is due.

When Linguini steals all the limelight and attributes Gusteau's new found success all to himself and his love interest, it breeds sour resentment in Remy who eventually leaves Linguini to his own devices.

You decide what's more important to you: your ego or your career. An effective leader always shares the limelight and generously gives credit, while a poor leader hogs up all the accolades creating resentment and unwanted enemies.

f you want to fast-track your success, go out of your way to catch people doing something right and give them the credit they crave so desperately and rightfully deserve!

> ASK FOR A NEW PERSPECTIVE

When Anton Ego makes his grand appearance at Gusteau's to put the final nail in the coffin, he literally asks for a new perspective. "Surprise me!" he demands asking for something new off-the-menu.

We don't always have to go with the canned selection that's offered us - whether it's provided in a menu, business proposal, job offer, meeting agenda, or course curriculum. We can ask for a new perspective.

I suspect Ego was a management guru in his past life as this is great advice for managers as well. The next time you hold a meeting, ask for a new perspective. Or ask in advance of the meeting that each person come prepared to attend the meeting with at least one new idea or new way of doing things.

Ask them to surprise you. The results may indeed surprise you - and hopefully for the better! (For added emphasis or just for fun and humor, take your team out to see Ratatouille or play clips from the movie at your meeting once it comes out in DVD).

Speaking of management gurus, I'm thinking of co-authoring a follow-up to Dr. Spencer Johnson's "Who Moved My Cheese." I think I'll call it: "Who Made My Ratatouille: Motivational Wisdom from Remy the Rat."

The oreck family history

The Oreck company is known for making vacuums, but it also produces air cleaners and miscellaneous household products. The company makes several models of household vacuums, shop (wet/dry) vacuums, floor waxers and refinishers, and air purifiers.

The Oreck Corporation was founded by David Oreck in the United States in 1963. The company is based in New Orleans, Louisiana, and its principal manufacturing facilities are in a modern 375,000 square foot factory in Long Beach, Mississippi.

Oreck Corporation started as a manufacturer of upright vacuum cleaners for the hotel industry in the United States. They designed a lightweight yet powerful and durable vacuum which was preferred by hotel housekeepers over the very heavy models available at that time. Oreck vacuums proved so popular that they are now used in over 50,000 hotels worldwide. After using these efficient vacuums at work, hotel personnel wanted to buy the machines for home use, which prompted Oreck to manufacture household models as well as their commercial line. Their products, while not cheap, are known for exceptional durability and ease of handling.

The Oreck XL 8-pound vacuum cleaner, aside from being one of the lightest models on the market, has a factory-tested estimated product lifespan of 18 years. The Arthritis Foundation gave this vacuum an Ease-of-Use Commendation for its exclusive Helping Hand Handle, which is ergonomically designed to reduce strain on wrists and arms. The Oreck air cleaner works by attracting air particles such as pollen and dust onto an electrically-charged collection grid. One unit can clean the air of a 30 foot square room. After passing air over a collection plate to trap particles, an Air Revitalizer is added at the end of the air cleaner which releases negative ions to revitalize the air. The Air Revitalizer can be turned on or off on the Professional Air Purifier. Leaving theAir Revitalizer on provides a pleasant, clean smell, but has no effect on the air purifier’s cleaning efficiency.

The Oreck Air Purifier is not an ozone generator because it does not rely on ozone as part of the cleaning process. However, ozone is a natural by-product of many electrical appliances. The Air Purifier’s Air Revitalizer emits only a very low level of ozone, well under UL and FDA guidelines of 50 ppb (parts per billion). Though ozone generators are sold by other manufacturers, they do a poor job of cleaning the air and generate high levels of ozone, especially in small spaces, which irritate the lungs. Consumers are advised by health authorities and the EPA not to purchase these units.

The collection grid of the Oreck air purifier, which should be kept clean to maintain the efficiency of the unit, is easy to remove and can be washed simply by a short soak in warm water and detergent. The company offers a specialized cleaning solution for the collection cell, but unless the air is full of tarry substances such as cigarette smoke, this is not necessary. Other than the carbon filter, which is not necessary to clean the air, there are no disposable filters to buy.

The Oreck model functions differently from a HEPA filter. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance, and These filters use a mat of very fine fibers to capture airborne particles.

HEPA filters create high resistance to airflow, which gets worse as the filter loads with dirt. This resistance causes HEPA units to use more energy , and cost more to operate. As the filter becomes more and more clogged, performance declines. Therefore, HEPA units require the user to frequently change the expensive filters. Since Oreck uses only a washable collection plate, continuing cost is not an issue with their air filters.

However, it is important to keep the collection cell clean, as it does not function well once it covered with dust. The company advises users to wash the collector after 4 weeks of initial use and every 8 weeks thereafter, but every house has a different amount of dust, so it is best to check the unit every few weeks to see whether a film has accumulated on the collector.
